Immersive installation combining screens, vegetation and light

IMMERSIVE INSTALLATION / MOVING IMAGE

THE CYCLE
OF MOUNTAINS

SCROLL TO EXPLORE ↓

OVERVIEW

A mountain is not a fixed image, but a landscape continuously made and unmade.

The Cycle of Mountains is framed as an immersive environment where projected imagery, vegetation and light meet. The installation invites viewers to experience landscape as a changing system rather than a stable backdrop.

Inspiration, Research and How Might We

The rapid growth of cities has led to the destruction of forests. Year: 1980 Area: 4280 Year: 1990 Area: 4200 Year: 2000 Area: 4080 Year: 2010 Area: 3920 The area of global forests in the last 50 years. (Unit: millions of hectares) Year: 2020 Area: 3900 Year: 2030 Area: 3840 The inspiration comes from the Chinese fable "Yu Gong Yi Shan" and the Chinese idiom "Man shall conquer heaven." Now, for the sake of social development, people are also exerting this spirit and trying to break through natural limitations. Inspiration HMW MAN-MADE VR LAKES FORESTS The rapid development of the city has resulted in the destruction of the lake ecology. Global area of polluted lakes in the past 30 years. (Unit: 10,000 square kilometers) Year: 2010 Area: 10 Year: 2020 Area: 13 Year: 2030 Area: 16 Artificial heart Artificial skin Artificial prosthesis Artificial features As VR technology matures, humans seem to be one step closer to breaking natural limits. To improve quality of life and extend lifespan, humans are challenging traditional views of nature. Excessive human intervention and improper behavior lead to the deterioration of lake ecology. Daily life Military action Medical treatment Artificial joint If the 'man over nature' concept leads people to believe they can replace nature, could a future emerge where nature is entirely supplanted by artificial environments, satisfying human needs without natural elements?

Design Process, Ideation, Storyboard and Rendering Model

Design Process RENDERING MODEL SKETCH STORY BOARD IDEATION IDEATION Since “landscape” often symbolizes nature, I plan to use 'mountains' as a starting point to design devices and scenes that simulate mountains. This allows future generations to experience natural environments through artificial mountains, prompting reflection on the notion of “man conquering nature”. When a person is under a lot of pressure, his mind thinks of nature. 1. He walked to the pavilion, which read "New Nature Pavilion." 3. He felt relaxed after experiencing the exhibition. 5. He goes outside, and it's all buildings or technology. 2. Sketch of the video device. He looked at the rockery, looked at his hands and took deep breaths. 4. But his anxiety came again, because it wasn't really natural. 6. Psychological pressure life pressure NATURE New Nature Pavilion

Scene Graph and The Future

Scene Graph THE FUTURE Despite rapid technological advances allowing us to simulate the complexity and beauty of natural phenomena, whether technology can fully replace nature's subtlety and vitality remains uncertain. Facing this reality, we look to the future while maintaining reverence for the natural world.
